There are thousands of companies out there who supply and distribute industrial supplies. So how do we know which companies do industrial supplies at industrial strength? For a closer look, check out these five industry leaders- all on MDM’s 2013 Top 40 Industrial Distributors list.

1. Industrial Distribution Group 10

Ranking as number 22 on the list, Industrial Distribution Group comes in behind some major players, both foreign and domestic. IDG is headquartered in Belmont, NC and is comprised of seven companies. IDG’s sales continue to grow each year, rising from $564 million in the 2013 fiscal year, to $685 million in 2014’s.Industrial Distribution Group launched IDGsupply.com in October 2012, with e-commerce functionality, a blog and same-day shipping.

2. Mc-Master Carr 4

Ranking at number 11 on the top 40 list, Mc-Master Carr is one of the largest competitors in the maintenance, repair and operations sector. The company is headquartered in Elmhurst, IL, but has 5 operation facilities in Chicago, central New Jersey Los Angeles, Atlanta and Cleveland. Due to the fact that McMaster-Carr is privately held, the company does not share details on its business or revenues. However, because of their strong online platform, which provides more than 510,000 products, McMaster-Carr competes with big dogs like W.W. Grainger.

3. Motion Industries 2

Number 6 on MDM’s list, Motion Industries is headquartered in Birmingham, AL. Motion has 509 branches, 14 distribution centers and 50 service centers. Motion Industries distributes industrial replacement parts, industrial supplies and material handling products. They offer an online catalog of their products, which are available for purchase on their website. In recent years, Motion Industries has expanded its product offerings to include systems automation products, as well as energy-efficiency products. Motion typically does around $4.5 billion a year in revenue.

4. MSC Industrial Supply 2

Number 9 on the list, MSC is an up and comer in the B2B e-commerce sector. MSC is headquartered in Melville, NY, and has over 100 branches and four major Customer Fulfillment Centers located throughout the United States. MSC has built out its online presence, which accounts for a large percentage of its revenue. MSC is aiming to hit $4 billion in sales by 2016. MSC plans to continue adding to its product portfolio, primarily through e-commerce on its website.

5. Airgas 0

Coming in at the number 5 spot on MDM’s list, Airgas is a big player in the industrial supply industry. Headquartered in Randor, PA, Airgas has 900 branches, 200 cylinder fill plants and many other facilities like CO2 production plants and spec gas labs. In 2012, the company acquisitioned 18 companies, which greatly contributed to its growth. Last year, Airgas did $5.1 billion in revenue, and that number is projected to grow by the end of 2014.
