Community Blog / Skinny Ms. delivers women's health and fitness needs in one site

Swimsuit season is right around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I’m unprepared. Like most of my colleagues, I’ve been holed up inside hiding from the dread of winter. Lately though I’ve begun realizing that even with all the snow, sleet and slush around, we’re already in March, and it’s time to embrace the coming of summer.

So like any frantic female faced with this pre-spring dilemma, I have been combing the web in an attempt to find that perfect nutrition and exercise regimen that will have me whipped into shape before the summer sun hits the beach. Imagine my delight (and relief!) when I found SkinnyMs.com, an up-and-coming player in the health and fitness world with all the information I need in one place.

The site has been up for just over a year but already making quite a splash. They’ve recently celebrated an important milestone for any website – reaching one million unique visitors per month.  So with a focus on their early and rapid growth, I sat down with co-founder Dalicia Ramey to congratulate her and ask what’s next for her and for Skinny Ms.

What was the inspiration behind Skinny Ms.?

Really the whole venture can be traced back to the Facebook page my co-founder created in September of 2011. A few months later, the page had grown to more than 200,000 Likes, and we quickly realized we’d tapped into a niche and were offering our health and fitness message in a format that women were really responding to.

We created Skinny Ms. with a unique formula in mind: we wanted to ensure that our readers could relate to and rely on us year-round. Obviously a lot of people are looking for recipes during the holidays, and as the warm months roll around, we’re all searching for new fitness workouts and programs. To keep our followers interested, we also offer unique content that is tied to real experiences, easy to follow and eliminates the guesswork for readers.

We stay tuned into our audience and who they are: they are women with no down time; they are mothers who are conscious about health and weight, and work to feed their families responsibly.

When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Always. I started in the MGM MIRAGE corporate offices overseeing public relations for the hotel group in Las Vegas and stayed on with them for five years. I also worked for Moët-Hennessey and Rolls Royce Motor Cars in the years after I left Las Vegas. Those experiences definitely put a great business foundation underneath me and gave me the feeling that I could succeed as an entrepreneur.

Not only did my past positions teach me how to manage budgets, host events, and create memorable and impactful experiences for clients, but they also inspired me to uphold the highest standards for the products I represent and for myself as an individual.

Even when I was working for corporations I knew I wanted to have my own business. I knew I had the innate ability to recognize opportunities and create something out of nothing, and that’s a big part of the beauty of Skinny Ms. for me; it continues to be an opportunity to build this concept and website that is already helping millions of women around the world.

What advice would you give to readers when it comes to choosing the right workout gear?

Something I always stress is to buy clothes that fit you now, not the size you want to be. Comfort is the most important thing, because if you’re not comfortable in your clothes and in your own skin, then a change in size is not likely to give you an improved self-image.

Specifically, water resistance is key.  I look for quality fabrics that will last through the toughest workouts, and for the long haul.

The most important thing to remember is that you do not need a cute, perfect outfit to go to the gym! Stay loyal to your priorities! Throw on what you have, whether it’s yoga pants or an oversized sweatshirt and just get out the door!

What can we find in your fridge right now?

Right now…not a lot actually, but normally I try and keep lots of fresh veggies from the farmer’s market, and I make my own juice a couple times a day. I regularly buy spinach, celery, beets, and kale.

I also love smoothies so I try and keep frozen fruits and almond milk on hand. It’s seldom that I eat red meat and usually steer clear of dairy products.  I’m a huge fan of quinoa!  Quinoa is probably one of the best-kept secrets in healthy eating.

What is your guilty food pleasure?

Oh that one’s easy...a tasty New York-style pizza! Thankfully pizza made with whole-wheat crust is now available, but you don’t find it often at traditional pizza spots. My favorite is pizza with a slightly charred crust, fresh and piping hot out of the brick oven.

What’s next for Skinny Ms.?

Our goal is growth. We want to help more women and families. We’ve managed to build a thriving social media network comprised of 600,000 fans. As we continue to get the word out and help women achieve their fitness and health goals, our next milestone goal is five million unique visitors per month.

We also want to continue providing superior quality content to help our readers discover the things of greatest benefit for them on their journey to a healthy lifestyle.  We’re always seeking partnerships with like-minded brands.

This year we plan to have a Skinny Ms. app developed as well as revamp our site. We also plan to get involved in community efforts in local markets.

Our top goal remains helping women, so we’re focused on joining causes that are in line with our mission.
