How to Raise your Business’ Yelp score (Legally)

No matter how much time, money, and energy you funnel into your business’ sales and marketing force, Yelp still plays a major role in building, maintaining, and possibly even ruining your company’s reputation. Yelp reviews have become a respected and, often times by business owners, feared - even one bad review can kick down sales. In the early days of Yelp, the site primarily focused on restaurants and bars. Now, Yelp reviews shape businesses in industries ranging from yoga instructors to HVAC dealers, and everything in between. Luckily, there are a few ways to control your Yelp search results.

Remove positive review from the filter

Some positive reviews “get stuck” and don’t have an effect on your overall score. Yelp uses an algorithm to filter out reviews that are stuck or are fakes. You can check your filter for these stuck positive reviews at the bottom of the company page. When you release the stuck reviews, they will increase your overall score.

Ask friends and family for help

Friends and family are excellent sources of positive reviews. Friends and family can say great, authentic things about your business and can have a big impact on a young Yelp page. It may even serve to counteract the effect of a negative review down the line.

Ask customers for help

If a customer likes what you do, it is not asking for a handout to ask for a positive Yelp review. Customers that give positive feedback and keep coming back have a vested interest in your success because they enjoy your business. It’s the same thing as telling customers to tell a friend - only it’s across Chicago and the World Wide Web.

Whatever you do, don’t try to fake reviews or go around the system. The FCC could come down on you, as well, although this is unlikely. Yelp uses advanced software that identifies inauthentic reviews and removes them and could then remove your company.
