DermBids - Letting you do online consultation without having to deal with a doctor!

It seems as though the Internet is taking care of everything nowadays. Looking for an apartment? Tool around on Craigslist for a few hours. Need a pizza before the faceoff? Just head to the homepage of nearly any chain you can think of. But what about that decade-old Lisa Frank tattoo blowing up your forearm? Does the Internet have a solution for that, too? It does now.

Chicago-based DermBids not only allows you to seek out cosmetic services in your area, but it eliminates the expensive consultation visit by handling the process online. Instead of going from doctor’s office to doctor’s office, anyone looking to get rid of an unsightly tattoo, cover up some spider veins, or any other minor cosmetic procedure can simply take a photo of the area in question and get a quote online, personalized for them.

We sat down with DermBids founder Eric Zabinksi to find out more about his growing Chicago cosmetic service consultation network, and the dishwashing job that eventually led him down the path of entrepreneurship.

What was the inspiration behind DermBids?

In 2010 I went to a dermatologist. I had a routine checkup for my skin and that routine checkup wasn’t routine. I had to go in a couple more times for additional procedures.

A few weeks later I got a big bill in the mail. I thought to myself, Boy I wish there was a better way for me to get personalized medical quotes without actually going to multiple dermatologists and scheduling multiple consultation visits.

I knew doctors essentially worked off rates and if I could reduce the consultation visit that would save both the doctor and myself more time.

When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I think I’ve always had the entrepreneurial spirit. It probably wasn’t until I got my first job -- I worked in a restaurant as a dishwasher and then I worked my way up to a cook. After doing my first job I thought it would be cool to be an owner rather than an employee.

I’ve always been trying to sell and try to figure out new and innovative ways to do things. My first entrepreneurial experience was probably realizing that I wanted to be an owner rather than an employee.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to do as an entrepreneur?

Juggle a million hats at a time. There are many different things that are fighting for my attention. One day I’m working on SEO, another day I’m doing design, another day I’m trying to hire some writers.

I think the hardest thing is balancing my time and assigning priorities to everything that is important.

Who are some people that inspire you?

Steve Jobs. I like his relentless pursuit of his own vision. I like Elon Musk for what he’s been able to do and disrupting all of the industries that he gets involved with.

I like what Jack Dorsey has done, not necessarily for Twitter, but for Square. I like disruptive entrepreneurs.

If you sold your company today for $1 billion, what’s the first thing you would do with the money?

I probably would do some angel investing. I would start up additional companies and I would also help entrepreneurs pursue their dreams.

I’d take some vacations along the way. I’d like to go to Hawaii, and also out of the country. I haven’t really been outside of Mexico and Canada.

What is your idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness is accomplishing personal and career goals. I think the challenge for me to be happy is that I’m always adding additional goals and I’m always pushing my own envelope to do better and go further.

What does 2013 have in store for DermBids?

What’s next for DermBids is for me to grow our doctor and MedSpa network and to generate more traffic for DermBids using SEO and pay-per-click advertising, to grow my marketplace.
