Seven ways to melt startup stress before it melts you
Newsflash: Life is chaotic, stressful and never-ending for Entrepreneurs!
The constant, fast-paced entrepreneurial lifestyle is part of the draw, and although the pandemonium is graciously accepted, we constantly forget to debunk. Staying sane and relatively stress-free will not only promote your overall wellbeing, but being your most productive and balanced self will ultimately benefit your business.
Here are seven quick pointers for achieving entrepreneurial zen:
Book a lunch meeting.
Lunch meetings with clients or associates are a great way to break up the day and add some much needed socialization to an often isolated work life. (This stress buster may even be a considered a tax write-off—a twofer!)
Breathe with purpose.
Busy entrepreneurs often forget to take time to take a few relaxation breaths. During those turbulent moments, stop and take 10 deep breaths to de-stress. It’s therapeutic—try it now!
Organize your space.
Whether you have a dedicated office space or you’re a nomadic entrepreneur traversing from coffee shop to coffee shop, keep your physical area neat and tidy. Clutter equals stress!
Organize your mind.
There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to starting a business—no one expects you to keep everything straight. Try using an online management system like Trello or Asana to provide structure to your daily hustle and flow, so you don’t miss an important call or deadline that will send you into a stress spiral.
Nourish your body.
Sometimes we get too busy to eat. Sometimes we just eat junk throughout the day. There’s no excuse for neglecting your health! Eating right, drinking enough water and getting some exercise during the day keeps you focus and energized, helping you avoid those slumps that slow you down.
Enjoy a quick jam session.
We all have that one embarrassing song we belt out in the shower or car. (Don’t deny it—everyone has a song!) Enjoy three and a half minutes of bliss and rock out shamelessly, whether out loud or in the privacy of headphones.
As entrepreneurs, we’re constantly one the go. A 9-to-5 workday simply doesn’t exist! That’s part of the thrill, but it’s important to dial it down occasionally, no matter how resistant you are to the idea. Turn off the computer, step away from the iPhone and do something unrelated to work for an hour each day. Watching TV while answering emails doesn’t count! Spend time with family, and dare we suggest it—take a vacation sometime!
