Michelle Appel-Kern: A Woman Worth Watching

Everyone once in a while, a star is born. Michelle Appel-Kern, or MAK, may just be that shooting star we all watch soar across the sky. She was recently named one of Diversity Journal’s 2014 Women Worth Watching, a highly prestigious award recognizing outstanding businesswomen.

The Women Worth Watching award celebrates exceptional female executives in a variety of fields. Peers, colleagues and mentors nominate women for their initiative and achievements as prominent leaders in their careers. MAK was one of the recipients this year, and also received a featured profile in the issue for her work as the CEO of her marketing agency, Mak & Ger.

Women Worth Watching features many incredible women, but MAK stands out in several ways. Mak & Ger, which she co-founded in January 2011, is a small startup. Other women honored often work for huge corporations such as General Electric, PepsiCo and Starbucks. MAK was the only woman this year featured in the “Media” category, while many of her fellow honorees work in industries like Legal and Professional Services. And, at age 29, she is one of the youngest executives ever to make the list.

Mak & Ger is a marketing and PR agency that focuses on increasing revenue for clients in the B2B space. The company’s inbound marketing approach is based on social listening and the sales funnel, turning strangers into clients with engagement and permission marketing. And, according to MAK, after receiving this award, “People have been reconnecting and business has boomed.”

All of the women honored by Diversity Journal are forging the way for more women to hold positions of leadership in business. For MAK in particular, this award is “a big accomplishment because advertising is a male-dominated industry.” Her achievements at such a young age give great hope that more women will step into roles of leadership earlier and in fields that are traditionally male-heavy.

As for Mak & Ger, exciting things are on the horizon. “Because of this award, a lot of big opportunities are happening,” she says. What those might be, we can’t wait to find out. There’s no doubt that MAK will continue shooting for the stars, and we are delighted to watch her shine.
