Four Great Movies for Entrepreneurs to Learn While Being Entertained

Movies are a great way for entrepreneurs to learn what to do, and especially what not to do, in the world of business. There is a lot to learn from these stories - whether they inspire us to go to the next level, or serve as tales of caution. Below are four business movies that are favorites among entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Jerry Maguire

At first glance this appears to be a love story, but Jerry Maguire’s (Tom Cruise) learned commitment to his client is refreshing. This movie is about a sports agent that quits his job after taking a step back and questioning his place and the company. He loses it all, or so it seems, until he makes a new life for himself as an entrepreneur with the help of a loyal client and staffer.

Trading Places

What does it take to be a successful business owner? This is a story of a wealthy man (Dan Aykroyd) who works as a future commodities broker and has his entire life (and money) taken from him and given to a homeless man (Eddie Murphy) by his two bosses, who are just making a bet.  It also explores the age old debate between friends, family, and love versus money and power.

The Social Network

This story of the creation of the largest social network of our time (so far) is full of heartbreak and sacrifice - sound familiar? The Social Network is the cinematic telling of the birth of Facebook, and it reflects the personal struggle of creating a business and an empire.

The Aviator

The Aviator is a movie about Howard Hughes, the eccentric millionaire that had a career as a director from the 1920s into the 1940s, and also had a hand in aviation and other large industries. It wasn’t Hughes’ money or obsession with his businesses that made him who he is (although it probably didn’t hurt). This film shows his great attention to detail, perfectionism, and drive that separated him from his competitors.
